Cutting the Fat: Avoiding Overstuffed Research Guides 

In the latest instalment of our "More Bang for Your Buck" series, Claire sat down with Giulia from Field Notes to dive deep into a common issue in the research industry - the tendency to overload research guides. She dubs this phenomenon "content foie gras!" With overstuffed guides, the integrity of research can falter, impacting not only participants but also affecting insights and client relationships.

Identifying the Roots of Overstuffing 

One of the primary causes of this issue appears to be insecurity. Researchers often feel compelled to ask every possible question, mistakenly believing it will safeguard them against missing crucial insights. As Giulia aptly described the scenario, it’s like packing for a holiday in the sun with a suitcase full of unnecessary jumpers "just in case." We must feel confident that as researchers we’re making the right decisions. After all, it’s our expertise that clients are buying. 

In addition, the inability to push back on client demands plays a significant role. What begins as a concise, targeted set of activities can balloon into a monstrous 20-page guide after rounds of numerous revisions. Less experienced researchers, in particular, might struggle to assertively guide conversations, letting client hesitations override methodological integrity. 

The Consequences for Participants and Researchers

The adverse effects on participants cannot be overstated. A burdensome guide can lead to participant fatigue, resulting in dropouts or worse, poor-quality responses. The cost of this is significant, both financially and in terms of reputational damage. It affects the research industry as a whole.

For researchers, overloaded guides mean sifting through volumes of mediocre content. Even with AI tools to aid analysis, poor-quality input ultimately undermines the quality of insights. AI might streamline the sorting process, but it can't conjure up the nuanced, rich stories that come from well-crafted responses. 

The Ripple Effect on Client Relationships 

Overstuffed guides don’t just burden participants and researchers; they also dilute the value of the final insights presented to clients. Instead of actionable, focused insights, clients receive a deluge of very ordinary data points. Therefore it's crucial to manage client expectations early on. Emphasising that more questions don’t necessarily equate to more value is key – it’s a case of quality over quantity. So being transparent about methodological limitations and the impact on outcomes, can foster understanding and collaboration. 

A Call to Elevate the Research Experience 

Ultimately, the practice of saying "yes" to every client request without regard for research quality undermines our industry. If we want to be seen as consultants, not just suppliers, then we need to consult! There needs to be a courageous approach to client relationships. As researchers, we need to communicate the consequences of overextending a research guide, and be comfortable saying no.  

It's clear that respecting the boundaries of a research guide and championing quality over quantity can transform outputs and have a positive impact on the industry. It's about valuing every stakeholder's role, from participants to recruiters. The goal is to ultimately deliver insights that not only meet but exceed client expectations.
