Research with intent: balancing rigour and creativity

What makes insights truly powerful - precision, or imagination?

Soundbites and snappy debriefs have become the norm. Many stakeholders want quick answers, headline insights, and tidy one-liners they can share in meetings. But if research bends too far towards soundbites and brevity, it risks losing the very foundation that gives those insights meaning: rigour. At Hummingbird Insights, we believe the challenge isn’t choosing between rigorous evidence and engaging delivery. It’s about finding the balance that makes insights both solid and compelling.

Why rigour matters

Rigour is the backbone of trust in research. It’s about how we design conversations; how we create space for authentic voices; and how we carefully interpret what we hear. Without rigour, insights risk being reduced to anecdotes or opinions.

For us, rigour means being deliberate at every stage: from the way we frame discussion guides, to how we challenge our own biases in analysis, to the discipline of connecting patterns back to the bigger question. It’s not about rigid rules; it’s about thoughtful choices that give structure and clarity to our curiosity.

This discipline ensures that what emerges from the research isn’t just interesting storytelling, but well-founded interpretation that clients can act on with confidence.

Why creativity matters

Creativity is where research comes alive. It’s the ability to look beyond the obvious, to challenge assumptions that others accept at face value, and to reframe the problem in a way that opens up new avenues, and ways of thinking.

Creativity allows us to see connections others miss, to look beyond what is said, and to communicate findings in a way that resonates. It’s not an afterthought, it’s a way of thinking that ensures insights are relevant, human, and actionable.

Not either/or: how rigour and creativity strengthen each other

There’s often an assumption that rigour and creativity pull in different directions - one grounded, the other free-flowing. In fact they strengthen each other.

  • Rigour ensures that what we hear is interpreted with care and confidence.
  • Creativity ensures that what we hear is framed in ways that spark fresh thinking and real impact.

Treating them as opposites risks undervaluing both. Rigour without creativity can feel dry and uninspiring. Creativity without rigour can drift into speculation. Research with intent needs both: the discipline to ground insights and the imagination to make them resonate.

Research with intent: The Hummingbird Way

At Hummingbird, we describe our philosophy as methodological sharpness combined with imaginative thinking

That balance comes through in the way we design studies: structured enough to create clarity, yet flexible enough to follow unexpected threads. It shapes how we analyse: paying close attention to what participants share, while also reframing questions to uncover deeper meaning. And it guides how we deliver insights: grounded in evidence but always shared in a way that captures attention and drives action.

In short: rigour ensures we ask the right questions; creativity opens new ways of seeing, and together they lead to purposeful insights.
