Over recent months there've been rumblings that insights have become too superficial – that they lack depth and human understanding. Who wants lacklustre insights? Or to not really get to the heart of and understand consumers? Not us! And hopefully not you!
Clearly superficial insights can have serious consequences. It can lead to flawed decision-making, as brands make critical choices based on incomplete or misleading information, therefore eroding trust in the value of qualitative research.
So, let’s start by looking at what may be causing this.

The Pitfalls of Overly Structured Qualitative Approaches
One of the reasons why qual research can feel lacking in depth is if the approach and discussion guide are rigid and formulaic. In an effort to ensure consistency, reliability, and "objectivity," qual research can rely on approaches and guides that inadvertently limit the richness and spontaneity of the conversation that don’t allow flex, or time, for stories and themes to emerge.
By sticking to a script, we risk missing the unexpected insights that can emerge organically from a more open dialogue. Participants may feel like they are being "questioned" rather than engaged in a genuine exchange of ideas. Consequently participants may hold back their true thoughts and feelings in an effort to "give the researcher what they want".
And sometimes, a discussion guide becomes so rammed full of questions there isn’t the time to get into more ‘meaty’ discussions – it's time to move on before uncovering rich insights.
So, what can we do?

Embracing the Messiness of Human Experience
We need to embrace the inherent messiness and unpredictability of human experience. Qualitative research is not a science, but an art. It requires a delicate balance of technique, empathy, and just the right amount of creative flair.
This means being willing to let go of our preconceived notions and then truly listen to what our participants have to say. It means being comfortable with the uncertainty and ambiguity that can arise. Resisting the urge to force our findings into tidy, predefined categories. Not always easy!
To get those juicy, impactful insights, we need to tap into our emotional intelligence. Our ability to read between the lines, pick up on subtle cues, and connect with participants on a deeper level.

Cultivating Empathy and Emotional Connection
At the heart of qualitative research lies the power of human connection. When we forge genuine relationships with our participants, to truly understand their lived experiences and the emotions that drive their behaviours, we unlock a level of insight that can be truly transformative.
To do this, there needs to be a deep sense of empathy – the ability to step into our participants' shoes and see the world through their eyes. This means going beyond the surface-level questions and probing deeper into the underlying motivations, fears, and aspirations that shape their perspectives. It takes time. It means being willing to sit with uncomfortable emotions, to bear witness to the joys and struggles of our participants' lives, and to then let those experiences resonate within us.
It's about creating a safe, empathetic space where participants feel truly seen and heard.

The insights that emerge are nuanced and subjective. They're based on the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of real human beings - which can be messy, complex, and difficult to neatly categorise.
Think of us as seasoned detectives, piecing together the puzzle of the human psyche. And this can take time – the ‘answer’ doesn’t magically appear after one group discussion!
Make it fun and engaging!

Whatever the approach, it should be fun and engaging for participants as this is when they feel inspired to open up and share their authentic selves.
We should be asking bold, thought-provoking questions. Engaging participants in genuine, meaningful dialogue. And most importantly, allowing ourselves to be surprised, delighted, and even a little bit awed by the insights that emerge.
By reclaiming the passion and richness that should be at the heart of our work, we can uncover the deeper truths that lie beneath the surface.
And deliver insights that truly transform businesses and drive meaningful change.
