My washing machine has 14 standard programs, the ability to change the temperature and spin speed on each, along with options for multi rinse, colour care, steam hygiene and direct injection! How many options do I use? One option accounts for 70% of the time and two others for the remaining 30%.
Take a look at your TV remote. It’s probably a similar story. How many of the buttons and settings do you actually use?
Sometimes engineers and designers can get carried away with adding features and functionality just because it’s possible. But does it make the experience better? Probably not. Instead, it distracts us from the core functions, creates a more complex interface, and makes it more difficult and time consuming to do what we want to do. At best, these additional features are ignored.
The same principle applies to many things be it a current account, a credit card, a website...
Focus on the core functions and deliver those really well. No one will remember the 10th feature.
